Mission & Goals of MEPIELAN CENTRE

  • Carry out new and innovative research and teaching, on issues of international environmental law and sustainable development, with an emphasis on the Mediterranean region and on international negotiation techniques

  • Promote an inter-disciplinary approach to international law and international relations in order to achieve a more integrated understanding of environmental governance regimes, particularly as they operate in the Mediterranean

  • Co-operate with key international, regional, national and non-governmental organizations including the Mediterranean Action Plan / United Nations Environment Programme (MAP/UNEP), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union, the Council of Europe (CE), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE)

  • Promote cooperation in the fields of research, education and training with relevant academic and scientific centers and research institutes in Greece, in the Mediterranean, Europe, in the United States and in Canada and other regions

  • Cooperate with the Secretariats of Conventional Environmental Regimes that are related or functionally associated with the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean.

  • Organize international training seminars and international conferences for the enhancement of scientific dialogue and development of research expertise on current issues of international and European environmental law and policy, with emphasis on the Mediterranean and international environmental negotiation and diplomacy

  • Organize national workshops and seminars for the enhancement of the visibility of knowledge about international environmental governance agreements which are applicable to Greece with a view to their effective promotion, communication and implementation

  • Actively contribute to the scientific consolidation of the translation output into Greek, of terms and concepts, as well as of texts of international environmental agreements

  • Strengthen and support, at all levels, relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the Department of International and European Studies at the Panteion University

  • Promote public and media awareness and improved public participation regarding international environmental agreements

  • Undertake research projects and provide consultancy services
